Week 1 of VLOGtober 2018

EnHymn – Week #1 of VLOGtober 2018

Well, this year I decided to change things up a little and participate in VLOGtober.

For those of you who don’t follow video blog circles closely, VLOGtober is a month-long event where vloggers commit to put out one piece of “content” (video blog) once a day during October.

Most vloggers, especially daily vloggers who already put out a video a day, use this opportunity to spice things up by doing Autumn, Thanksgiving, Fall, Halloween related content for the entire thirty days, then (I imagine) IMMEDIATELY transition into Christmas videos (LOL).

For me, who is not a daily vlogger, who only puts out one piece of content a week, 7x’ing my video output is a pretty big deal. Imagine if you had to 7x the job you were doing at work, or 7x the number of kids that were in your charge… Well it’s EXACTLY LIKE THAT!

I’m kidding, but the concept translates a little.

Multiplying the amount of work you do on something, especially something that is pretty routine for you, can be a real headache, as I have discovered this VLOGtober.

And it’s all for you good folks! So I hope you enjoy it!

It’s been a week now of this little experiment, and instead of doing my usual blog-per-vlog strategy, I thought I’d group them altogether in one article, one week at a time, so you could binge watch at your leisure.

So without further ado, here are all the topics I covered this week of VLOGtober 2018 :

Day 1 of VLOGtober

This first day of VLOGtober 2018 was just simply an announcement.

In this video, I just tell folks that I’m going to try this thing called VLOGtober.

I also outline the weekly and daily schedule for the month, which I’ll outline here as well…:

Monday – “Worship Reflections”

On Mondays, the plan is to spend time reflecting on the WORD that we received at the FUMC on Sunday. The plan is to outline the scripture, give my takeaways, and add some of my own thoughts on top of it all.

The other thing I hope that will come out of this segment is community conversations. I hope that others will be encouraged to post their Worship Reflections from service and I would love to jump into those conversations and share the takeaways from different churches.

Tuesday and Thursday – “Daily Devotional”

Tuesdays and Thursdays are dedicated to reading scripture together and refining our understanding of these passages.

On these days, we’ll go through a passage together and I’ll give my thoughts on it.

It should be very similar to a writer daily devotional, but only twice a week instead of everyday, and in a new format (video) instead of print.

Wednesday – “My Thought On…”

On Wednesday, I take a topic that is important to folks or that is a current issue facing the church today and I talk about it.

The plan is to cover topics on Christian Leadership, Worship, and current events. Should be a lot of fun!

Friday – “How-to…” OR “Hymn History”

Friday I’ve dedicated to my normal weekly content: How-tos and Hymn Histories.

I think folks will appreciate the “normal” stuff being included in the weekly line-up (still). I also thought Friday would be a good day for folks, give you the weekend to check it out.

Saturday – “Live Stream Saturday”

I truly don’t have a strong vision for the Saturday Live Stream, other than it needs to be live content.

I think this will turn out being more community building oriented, where folks have the opportunity to ask me questions about worship or ministry, but we’ll have to wait and see!

Sunday – REST DAY

When I first decided to do this VLOGtober thing, I knew I would need Sunday off.

It’s just such a stinking busy day for me.

It just is.

With that in mind, I thought of Sunday as a REST DAY from the daily videos.

So, there’s the context for this whole VLOGtober thing and the calendar I created for it. There were, of course, two exceptions to this calendar.

The first was this Intro video (on a Monday), which I used to set everything up. The second was the Day #02 video, which was…

Day 2 of VLOGtober

Day two was another exception to the VLOGtober calendar. It was a normal VLOG and not a Daily Devo like it should have been, but it was because I needed time to get ahead in the content creation.

This video was one I already had ready to go, so it worked out nicely for me.

Here, I talk about the process behind congregational song selection that I go through on a weekly basis for the worship of the church.

I also outline the format or STRUCTURE of Worship and the some different ideologies that make up different denominational structures.

It was funny because I had no idea how much SINGING I was doing during the process until I watched the video back. Really interesting for me.

I also organize some choir folders in the end.

Day 3 of VLOGtober

Today we talked about Christian Leadership.

I recently read through a book titled “Courageous Leadership” by a guy named Bill Hybles.

It’s a cool book, written at the turn of the millennium, and I’m sure you would get something out of it, even if you aren’t in ministry.

Anyway, in this book, Bill outlines 10 different leadership styles that folks tend to emulate.

In the video, I encourage people to understand the different styles, give a description of them and some examples, then encourage them to become self-aware as to their own individual leadership style.

Try it out yourself and let me know what category you think you align most closely with!

Day 4 of VLOGtober

Thursday we had our very first Daily Devo.

We cover Hebrews 2, and discuss HOW LUCKY WE ARE!

No excuses for being a depressed human after watching this video, no excuses!

Day 5 of VLOGtober

Friday I taught everyone how to tie a tie.

This is the method I use when I tie a tie.

It’s the same knot I used growing up, that I used in college, and that I still use today.

It’s fast, maybe 3 steps total, takes less than 10 seconds to do… I really believe it is the easiest and fastest knot out there!

Check it out!

Day 6 of VLOGtober

I tried live streaming for the first time!

It was fun and different, lot of apprehension going into this particular day for me.

It took time to set up, a lot of mental effort to think through what I was going to do and say, and I had to be super intentional about keeping the pace and energy up on this live stream because I didn’t have the usual benefit of being able to EDIT things out (like long pauses or coffee breaks).

The big take away from day 6 was that I need to figure out how to see comments in real time. I also would love to add Q&A into the format. I very rarely get to do that kind of thing in my usual videos, so it would be nice.

Day 7 of VLOGtober

For VLOGtober 2018, I decided to take Sundays off.

I know that kind of seems escapist, like maybe I’m chickening out of the deal here, but truly, I needed the time.

GOD asks of us to observe the Sabbath and keep it Holy. Ancient Hebrews took that to mean that you should do no work, as mirrored the account of the last “day” of creation. Work was a disruption of Holiness. The Pharisees took this many steps further in Jesus time, believing that if everyone, all of the Jewish people, just ONCE would obey this singular command, then their Messiah would appear.

So, they put extra parameters around the rule to ensure it wouldn’t be broken.

They policed how far one could travel before it could be considered work.

They policed how meals were prepared, because cooking is work.

They legalized the concept of the “day” differently than we think of it in modernity.

I’m surprised anyone was even allowed to go to Temple with all these parameters!

So, that was week #1 of VLOGtober 2018.

Please consider subscribing to the channel if you haven’t already. It would mean a lot to me if you were able to comment on a video this month as I try and give away my best secrets FOR FREE everyday.

Thanks for your support, and HAPPY VLOGTOBER!

Go in Peace.
